LOCAL CONSERVATION AGENTS FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Global drivers like industrialization, high energy consumption and a rising demand for raw materials lead to uncontrolled mining and lodging as well as unprecedented greenhouse gas emissions, often at the cost of the local communities. Our planetary boundaries are already being exceeded in some cases. Developing and emerging countries are particularly threatened by climate change and the resulting change of ecosystem services because their livelihoods often rely directly on the health and productivity of natural resources. People have to become aware of the fact that an overuse or inefficient use of resources affects the quality of life profoundly for present and future generations.
Sustainable use of natural resources and improvement of livelihoods
Focusing on this aspect the Indonesian Country Unit is in the process of developing an innovative project concept to establish local conservation agents for sustainable use of natural resources and for the improvement of livelihoods. They organized a Kick-Off workshop where stakeholders worked together on defining challenges. Based on these facts they generated ideas and determined the frame and intention of the innovative concept.
The aim behind the concept is to empower local communities at four different pilot sites – Aceh, Central Kalimantan, Central Java and Flores – as actors of natural resources conservation. Within this idea they want to address issues at site level like a not fully developed planning & monitoring system for natural resources, an insufficient information system as well as the possibilities to strengthen the ecosystem. Important for tackling these issues and realizing the vision of empowerment is to intensify community capacity and improve community livelihood. Thereby the capacity building of communities is essential to effectively address the issues and analyze the current status of socio-economic development to enable local people to participate effectively and sustainably the process.
The next step is to conduct a needs assessment at each site together with the local communities to improve the innovative concept.
