Information and communications technologies (ICT) offer the potential to improve data availability and data quality for more accurate climate-related analysis. Informed decision-making for climate-resilient action requires reliable data to enable reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and adaptation to climate change-related risks and consequences.
Fields of innovation include, but are not limited to,
- Internet of Things (IoT) applications, which enable reliable environmental data to be collected through smart sensor networks, allowing for big data analysis and artificial intelligence (AI) explorations
- Open platforms, which empower scientists to share information, work collaboratively and improve contextualised climate change scenarios
- Innovative business models, which increase informal sector workers’ access to the formal economy and provide inclusive job opportunities through transparent market mechanisms
- Interregional exchange platforms, which allow climate change activists and advocacy groups around the globe to share best practice and lessons learned
The Innovation Factory supports its cooperating partners in identifying key areas in climate-related mitigation and adaptation and helps to develop ICT solutions, innovative business models and interdisciplinary networks to adequately address global climate change challenges.
