One of the most common reasons companies fail is the development of products or services for which there is no demand. The Human Centered Design (HCD) method offers a suitable solution to this problem by addressing human needs in the design of products or services. To make this approach more accessible, the Innovation Factory now introduces a Human Centered Design (HCD) e-learning crash course.

The HCD crash course is available for free on the BMZ e-learning platform atingi and mainly targets SMEs and their employees. It is divided into a one-hour fast track and an expert track. Both tracks guide the user through the basics and tools of the HCD method, with the expert track going even further in depth (e.g., time for reflection, toolkit). 

The learning material is embedded into storytelling and visualizations with the protagonists Chi and Bao at the center of the narrative. Chi is a young intern working in Bao’s recycling company. She is a graduate from the university where she studied Human Centered Design and introduces Bao to the subject matter in the scope of the course.

The course design is interactive, with an introduction at the beginning of every module and a quiz at the end to test the learning. Overall, learners follow the six steps of the HCD circle and have to complete a master quiz at the end of the course. Upon successful completion, they receive a certificate with their name on it. 

The course is easily translatable into other languages and can thus be easily adapted to other contexts. It was developed in collaboration with the GIZ Digital Transformation Center in Vietnam and Mind Games GmbH. All content is licensed under CC-BY-SA 4.0.

Human-Centered Design is an approach to the development of interactive systems that aims to make these systems user-friendly and useful. It focuses on users and their needs and expectations and takes into account the human factor as well as usability knowledge and methods. HCD can thus help to design products and services that are closer to the real needs of consumers and thereby prevent the production of goods for which there is no demand.
